Gempa bumi tanggal 26 Desember 2004 di Asia Tenggara, yang terbesar dalam kurun waktu 40 tahun terakhir dan terbesar kelima sejak tahun 1900, tercatat 9 pada skala Richter. Gempa tersebut beserta gelombang tsunami yang terjadi setelahnya menyebabkan bencana yang menewaskan lebih dari 220.000 orang. Patahan seluas 1.000 kilometer persegi yang muncul akibat pergerakan sejumlah lempengan di bawah permukaan bumi dan energi raksasa yang ditimbulkan oleh bongkahan tanah raksasa yang berpindah tempat, berpadu dengan energi raksasa yang terjadi di samudra untuk membentuk gelombang tsunami. Gelombang tsunami itu menghantam negara-negara Asia Tenggara seperti Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maladewa dan Seychelles, dan bahkan pesisir pantai Afrika seperti Somalia, yang terletak sejauh kurang lebih 5.000 kilometer.
Istilah “tsunami,” yang dalam bahasa Jepang berarti gelombang pelabuhan, menjadi bagian dari bahasa dunia pasca tsunami raksasa Meiji pada tanggal 15 Juni 1896 yang melanda Jepang dan menyebabkan 21.000 orang kehilangan nyawa.
Untuk memahami tsunami, sangatlah penting untuk dapat membedakannya dari pergerakan pasang-surut dan gelombang biasa yang diakibatkan oleh angin. Angin yang bertiup di atas permukaan laut menimbulkan arus yang terbatas pada lapisan bagian atas laut dengan memunculkan gelombang-gelombang yang relatif kecil. Misalnya; para penyelam dengan tabung udara dapat dengan mudah menyelam ke bawah dan mencapai lapisan air yang tenang. Gelombang laut mungkin dapat mencapai setinggi 30 meter atau lebih saat terjadi badai dahsyat, tapi hal ini tidak menyebabkan pergerakan air di kedalaman. Selain itu, kecepatan gelombang laut biasa yang diakibatkan angin tidaklah lebih dari 20 km/jam. Sebaliknya, gelombang tsunami dapat bergerak pada kecepatan 750-800 km/jam. Gelombang pasang surut bergerak di permukaan bumi dua kali dalam rentang waktu satu hari dan, seperti halnya tsunami, dapat menimbulkan arus yang mencapai kedalaman hingga dasar samudra. Namun, berbeda dengan gelombang pasang surut, penyebab gelombang tsunami bukanlah gaya tarik bumi dan bulan.
Tsunami merupakan gelombang laut berperiode panjang yang terbentuk akibat adanya energi yang merambat ke lautan akibat gempa bumi, letusan gunung berapi dan runtuhnya lapisan-lapisan kerak bumi yang diakibatkan bencana alam tersebut di samudra atau di dasar laut, peristiwa yang melibatkan pergerakan kerak bumi seperti pergeseran lempeng di dasar laut, atau dampak tumbukan meteor. Ketika lantai dasar samudra berpindah tempat dengan kecepatan tinggi, seluruh beban air laut di atasnya terkena dampaknya. Apa yang terjadi di lantai dasar samudra dapat disaksikan pengaruhnya di permukaan air laut, dan keseluruhan beban air laut tersebut, hingga kedalaman 5.000 - 6.000 meter, bergerak bersama dalam bentuk gelombang. Satu rangkaian bukit dan lembah gelombang itu dapat meliputi wilayah hingga seluas 10.000 kilometer persegi.
TSUNAMI TIDAK BERDAMPAK DI LAUTAN LEPAS
Di laut lepas tsunami bukanlah berupa tembok air sebagaimana yang dibayangkan kebanyakan orang, tetapi umumnya merupakan gelombang berketinggian kurang dari 1 meter dengan panjang gelombang sekitar 1.000 kilometer. Di sini dapat dipahami bahwa permukaan gelombang memiliki kemiringan sangat kecil (ketinggian 1 cm yang terbentang sejauh 1 km). Di wilayah samudra dalam dan lepas, gelombang seperti ini terjadi tanpa dapat dirasakan, meskipun bergerak pada kecepatan sebesar 500 hingga 800 km/jam. Hal ini dikarenakan pengaruhnya tersamarkan oleh gelombang permukaan laut biasa. Agar lebih memahami betapa tingginya kecepatan gelombang tsunami, dapat kami katakan bahwa gelombang tersebut mampu menyamai kecepatan pesawat jet Boeing 747. Tsunami yang terjadi di laut lepas tidak akan dirasakan sekalipun oleh kapal laut.
TSUNAMI MEMINDAHKAN 100.000 TON AIR KE DARATAN
Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tsunami ternyata bukan terdiri dari gelombang tunggal, melainkan terdiri atas rangkaian gelombang dengan satu pusat di tengah, seperti sebuah batu yang dilemparkan ke dalam kolam renang. Jarak antara dua gelombang yang berurutan dapat mencapai 500-650 kilometer. Ini berarti tsunami dapat melintasi samudra dalam hitungan jam saja. Tsunami hanya melepaskan energinya ketika mendekati wilayah pantai. Energi yang terbagi merata pada segulungan air raksasa menjadi semakin memadat seiring dengan semakin mengerutnya gulungan air tersebut, dan meningkatnya tinggi gelombang permukaan secara cepat dapat diamati. Gelombang berketinggian kurang dari 60 cm di laut lepas kehilangan kecepatannya saat mendekati perairan dangkal, dan jarak antargelombangnya pun berkurang. Akan tetapi, gelombang yang saling bertumpang tindih memunculkan tsunami dengan membentuk dinding air. Gelombang raksasa ini, yang biasanya mencapai ketinggian 15 meter tapi jarang melebihi 30 meter, melepaskan kekuatan dahsyat saat menerjang pantai dengan kecepatan tinggi, sehingga menyebabkan kerusakan hebat dan menelan banyak korban jiwa.
Tsunami memindahkan lebih dari 100.000 ton air laut ke daratan untuk setiap meter garis pantai, dengan daya rusak yang sulit dibayangkan. Gelombang raksasa paling tua yang pernah diketahui akibat gempa di laut, yang diberi nama “tsunami” oleh orang Jepang dan “hungtao” oleh orang Cina, adalah yang terjadi di Laut Tengah sebelah timur pada tanggal 21 Juli 365 M dan menewaskan ribuan orang di kota Iskandariyah, Mesir.
Ibukota Portugal hancur akibat gempa dahsyat Lisbon pada tanggal 1 November 1775. Gelombang samudra Atlantik yang mencapai ketinggian 6 meter meluluhlantakkan pantai-pantai di Portugal, Spanyol dan Maroko.
27 Agustus 1883: Gunung berapi Krakatau di Indonesia meletus dan gelombang tsunami yang menyapu pantai-pantai Jawa dan Sumatra menewaskan 36.000 orang. Letusan gunung berapi tersebut sungguh dahsyat sehingga selama bermalam-malam langit bercahaya akibat debu lava berwarna merah.
15 Juni 1896: “Tsunami Sanriku” menghantam Jepang. Tsunami raksasa berketinggian 23 meter tersebut menyapu kerumunan orang yang berkumpul dalam perayaan agama dan menelan 26.000 korban jiwa.
17 Desember 1896: Tsunami merusak bagian pematang Santa Barbara di California, Amerika Serikat, dan menyebabkan banjir di jalan raya utama.
31 Januari 1906: Gempa di samudra Pasifik menghancurkan sebagian kota Tumaco di Kolombia, termasuk seluruh rumah di pantai yang terletak di antara Rioverde di Ekuador dan Micay di Kolombia; 1.500 orang meninggal dunia.
1 April 1946: Tsunami yang menghancurkan mercu suar Scotch Cap di kepulauan Aleut beserta lima orang penjaganya, bergerak menuju Hilo di Hawaii dan menewaskan 159 orang.
22 Mei 1960: Tsunami berketinggian 11 meter menewaskan 1.000 orang di Cili dan 61 orang di Hawaii. Gelombang raksasa melintas hingga ke pantai samudra Pasifik dan mengguncang Filipina dan pulau Okinawa di Jepang.
28 Maret 1964: Tsunami “Good Friday” di Alaska menghapuskan tiga desa dari peta dengan 107 warga tewas, dan 15 orang meninggal dunia di Oregon dan California.
16 Agustus 1976: Tsunami di Pasifik menewaskan 5.000 orang di Teluk Moro, Filipina.
17 Juli 1998: Gelombang laut akibat gempa yang terjadi di Papua New Guinea bagian utara menewaskan 2.313 orang, menghancurkan 7 desa dan mengakibatkan ribuan orang kehilangan tempat tinggal.
26 Desember 2004: Gempa berkekuatan 8,9 pada skala Richter dan gelombang laut raksasa yang melanda enam negara di Asia Tenggara menewaskan lebih dari 156.000 orang.
PENYEBAB TINGGINYA DAYA RUSAK TSUNAMI
Menurut informasi yang diberikan oleh Dr. Walter C. Dudley, profesor oseanografi dan salah satu pendiri Museum Tsunami Pasifik, tak menjadi soal seberapa besar kekuatan gempa bumi, pergerakan lantai dasar samudra merupakan syarat terjadinya tsunami. Dengan kata lain, semakin besar perpindahan lempeng kerak bumi di lantai dasar samudra, semakin besar jumlah air yang digerakkannya, dan hal ini akan menambah kedahsyatan tsunami. Hal lain yang meningkatkan daya rusak tsunami adalah struktur pantai yang diterjangnya: Selain faktor seperti bentuk pantai yang berupa teluk atau semenanjung, landai atau curam, bagian dari pantai yang selalu berada di dalam air mungkin saja memiliki struktur yang dapat menambah kedahsyatan gelombang pembunuh.
Dalam pernyataannya lain, yang memperjelas bahwa tindakan pencegahan yang dilakukan tidak dapat dianggap sebagai jalan keluar sempurna, Dudley mengatakan bahwa Amerika dan Jepang telah mendirikan perangkat pemantau paling mutakhir di Samudra Pasifik, tapi seluruh perangkat ini memiliki tingkat kesalahan lima puluh persen!
TANDA-TANDA ZAMAN AKHIR
Bencana alam, yang tidak dapat dicegah menggunakan sarana teknologi atau tindakan penanggulangan dini, menunjukkan betapa tak berdaya manusia sesungguhnya.
Dari abad ke-20, yang ditengarai sebagai “abad bencana alam”, hingga kini, telah terjadi sejumlah bencana alam besar seperti gempa bumi, letusan gunung berapi, angin tornado, badai, angin topan, angin puyuh, dan banjir, disamping tsunami, dan semua ini telah menimpakan kerusakan parah dan merenggut nyawa jutaan manusia. Ketika seseorang memikirkan fenomena luar biasa ini, dapat dipahami bahwa hal ini memiliki kemiripan dengan fenomena alam yang dinyatakan sebagai pertanda masa awal dari Zaman Akhir.
Menurut apa yang dinyatakan dalam hadits, Zaman Akhir adalah suatu masa yang akan datang menjelang terjadinya hari kiamat, dan ketika nilai-nilai Al Qur’an tersebar luas ke masyarakat. Tahap pertama dari Zaman Akhir adalah di kala manusia menjauhkan diri dari nilai-nilai ajaran agama, ketika peperangan semakin meningkat, dan fenomena alam luar biasa terjadi.
Demikianlah, di dalam sejumlah hadits, kota-kota dan bangsa-bangsa yang dilenyapkan dari lembaran sejarah dikabarkan sebagai tanda-tanda Zaman Akhir. Dalam hadits-hadits yang mengupas masalah tersebut Nabi kita menyatakan:
“Saat (Hari Akhir) tidak akan terjadi hingga … gempa bumi menjadi sering terjadi.” (Bukhari)
“Peristiwa-peristiwa besar akan terjadi di masanya [Imam Mahdi].” (Ibnu Hajar Haytahami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi’alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, h. 27)
Ada dua peristiwa besar sebelum hari Kiamat … dan kemudian tahun-tahun gempa bumi. (Diriwayatkan oleh Ummu Salamah (r.a.))
“Banyak peristiwa yang begitu menyedihkan akan terjadi di masanya [Imam Mahdi].” (Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, 2/258)
Di tahap kedua Zaman Akhir, Allah akan membebaskan manusia dari kebobrokan akhlak dan peperangan melalui Imam Mahdi. Di masa ini, yang dikenal sebagai Zaman Keemasan, peperangan dan pertikaian akan berakhir, dunia akan dipenuhi oleh kemakmuran, keberlimpahan dan keadilan, dan nilai-nilai ajaran Islam akan melingkupi bumi dan diamalkan secara luas. Masa seperti ini tidak pernah terjadi sebelumnya, dengan izin Allah, tetapi akan berlangsung sebelum hari kiamat. Tahap ini sekarang tengah menunggu saatnya yang ditentukan oleh Allah.
Segala sesuatu di bawah kendali Allah. Orang-orang beriman yang memahami kebenaran ini dan yang memiliki keimanan tulus kepada Allah, berserah diri kepada Tuhan kita dengan pemahaman bahwa mereka tengah mengikuti takdir mereka. Allah telah mengatur segala sesuatu dengan sempurna, hingga rinciannya yang terkecil, sejak penciptaan bumi hingga Hari Kiamat. Segala sesuatu dicatat dalam kitab “Lauh Mahfuz”. Segala sesuatu telah terjadi dalam satu waktu dalam pandangan Allah, Yang tidak terikat oleh ruang ataupun waktu, dan ruang serta waktu dari setiap peristiwa telah ditetapkan. Fakta ini dinyatakan dalam sebuah ayat: “Untuk tiap-tiap berita (yang dibawa oleh rasul-rasul) ada (waktu) terjadinya dan kelak kamu akan mengetahui.” (Al Qur’an, surat Al An’aam, 6:67).
